So I finished New Amsterdam by Elizabeth Bear the other day. I really liked the conceit - that the colonies never broke away from England, and so they are still under British rule in the 1890s. The two main characters - Don Sebastien de Ulloa and Detective Inspector Abigail Irene Garrett, work well together. It's almost like reading an episode of Law and Order set in the past - with magic and vampires. The book is a series of short stories, relatively self contained, though they do build in chronology. The sequal, Seven for a Secret, comes out next year and already, I'm in.
Miles to Rivendell: 439. It's the end of my first week of the walk-to-job program and I feel really empowered that I was able to even do the first week.
A place to record my thoughts, my attempts at writing a novel and those shiny things that attract the attention of my hummingbird-brain. All these things literally have no mass.

Checking In
Okay, it's been months since I've written a post. I think I'm going to stop thinking about people reading this journal and being concerned about it. The thought "what do I have to say that people would be interested in reading?" has kept me from posting. I've decided this is a fallacy of thought and I need to get over it. I need to use this blog to get into the habit of daily writing, as Heather Sellers would say, start a writing life.
I'm going to keep a running list of books read this year, instead of what I'm currently reading. It's hard to keep up. Maybe I'll switch back to current books. I'd like to also track how much I read in a year. I know it's not as much as my wife,, S_, or our friend L_ with her crazy reading superpower, but I think I do pretty well.
