Addend Aggression

Struggling to teach addition to I_. She's not memorized and of the addition problems and is still thinking about each problem. Thus, her math takes forever, since she is still taking time to think about each problem and add it up in her head. S_ and I know that we need to spend more time going over flash cards with her.

Unfortunately, as smart as I_ is, she's definitely lazy and only wants to do the minimal required. How do you teach your child to work hard or that it's worth it to put in extra effort when trying to accomplish something? (sigh)

Neither S_ nor I were like that in school, so we are really not sure how to go forward here.
