Struggling to teach addition to I_. She's not memorized and of the addition problems and is still thinking about each problem. Thus, her math takes forever, since she is still taking time to think about each problem and add it up in her head. S_ and I know that we need to spend more time going over flash cards with her.
Unfortunately, as smart as I_ is, she's definitely lazy and only wants to do the minimal required. How do you teach your child to work hard or that it's worth it to put in extra effort when trying to accomplish something? (sigh)
Neither S_ nor I were like that in school, so we are really not sure how to go forward here.
A place to record my thoughts, my attempts at writing a novel and those shiny things that attract the attention of my hummingbird-brain. All these things literally have no mass.

Santa Crickets?
Need to do a "Cricket" themed craft for I_'s class as they are studying crickets in Science this year. Now I am fiddling with clothespins, pipe cleaners and wire to figure out the best way to make something vaguely cricket-like.
I will have to lead 60 second graders in this craft on Friday, so I've got to find the least destructive way to construct these things.

Taking a rare day off
It's been forever that I took a day to myself. I have a Dr.'s appointment at 12:30, so that basically shoots the whole day. Instead of going in to work this morning, I went to L_'s class to volunteer. It was so cute. Her teacher got them all doing meditation in a circle, "using their actor's tools" and talking about reaching into their self-control and concentration to relax and calm down.
I was talking to I_ about her favorite holidays. Here is an excerpt:
I: I like Easter because it is all about nature and Christmas because it is all about Jesus. ( She's getting ready for first communion this year, so we are talking about religion more and more.)
me: Well, you know, Easter is a religion holiday too. We remember Jesus dying on the cross and being reborn for us. (I will go into pagan roots of Easter a little later.) So that's whay we give out eggs - they are a symbol of rebirth and new life.
I (without missing a beat): MMMmmmm..... Candy life...

Blogging is more fun in England
OK, so I suck. It's official. Anyway, with work and school, it's all I can do to kiss S_ at night, read a few bedtime stories to the girls, and finish my next homework assignment.
Right now I'm sitting in a monastic cell that is masquerading as a student dorm room at Oxford University. We are here for my MBA program, ostensibly studying business climate in the EU. As far as I can tell, British people live in continual misery - today, it rained four times, snowed once, and for five minutes, there was hail. HAIL! I mean, WTF? Oh, and we were walking around outside the whole time...
My room comes complete with a portable kettle, but nothing else. I did get an internet connection, because I got one of the available connection cords early. Now the rest of the class is going to keep coming over asking to borrow it. I mean, what did we do before the internet, because now we fucking can't do without it at all.
At least I had some great fish and chips for dinner at The Checkers pub. No checkers were in evidence, sadly.

March Madness
OK, so it's been a crazy two weeks. I guess March is coming in like a lion, but it's personal craziness rather than the weather. (The weather has actually been pretty nice...)
School is killing me this week with two ginormous papers, two in-class presentations, and an in-class exam. I've been burning through next week's energy already, and I think S_ is ready to send me off to sleep for a few weeks. Either that or knit a Peter-cozy, throw it ontop of a sleeping me and put me in the corner next to the end table.
