Back in from the Cold...

Haven't posted in awhile. Work was super busy and we had the run of family events. Liliana, my youngest turned six, and we had a birthday party for 19 girls at the rec center. Isabella, my oldest, had her First Communion with 8,000 associated events and family in town. Once we got through that, I had the Kindergarten field trip to Great Country Farms. 100+ six year-olds at the farm was awesome but a little fraught. I was in charge of four kids and I probably counted my four 150 times in the course of the day.

Right now I am also updating this blog since I had to find something to do before I strangled the children.

Havock at the IRS

Just got off the phone with the IRS after about an hour. Due to a social security number error, they have inappropriately garnished my wages by 15%. The guy on the other end was very nice and apologetic. We did fix the problem, but since the federal government is what it is, one or two paychecks will likely be garnished before the correction kicks in and the amount is returned. (sigh) Although I'm pretty pissed, I can't fault the guy on the other end of the phone. It's certainly not his fault. I've been in the federal government long enough to know that. All I could think about was how many people call him each day and begin by screaming at him.

More Lessons from This Week

1. From my friend who works at Mt. Vernon: fleam is the new garniture. Prunt is so last week.

2. Your employees start looking at you funny when you begin discussing font choice. As in, the history of fonts and typeface creation.

3. I do, indeed, have the literary taste of a teenage girl. See "Books Read in 2010" sidebar.

Addend Aggression

Struggling to teach addition to I_. She's not memorized and of the addition problems and is still thinking about each problem. Thus, her math takes forever, since she is still taking time to think about each problem and add it up in her head. S_ and I know that we need to spend more time going over flash cards with her.

Unfortunately, as smart as I_ is, she's definitely lazy and only wants to do the minimal required. How do you teach your child to work hard or that it's worth it to put in extra effort when trying to accomplish something? (sigh)

Neither S_ nor I were like that in school, so we are really not sure how to go forward here.

OMG, If Florida loses...

...this house will not be worth living in.

Got it!

Finally figured out why comments weren't being allowed. It was a buried permissions thing. Now you can all comment to your heart's content. I will work on adding an acceptable profile picture next.

Off to work now, but I will try to post again later.

Getting on with it

Offspring #1 is getting stronger. Today she started to use the baby walker we got for her. S_ attached her bike basket to the front, and Offspring #2 is playing on it. I will take a picture and send it out to friends and family. I will be going back to work tomorrow and that will be hard. Today, for all the craziness with Offspring's cast and medication, seemed really normal. The problem is that there was nothing normal about it. I slept until 7 (2 hours later than normal) and we were finished eating dinner at 6 (before I get home usually). It just really brings home that the commute I have is really having a negative impact on my life. I'm not sure what to do about it, but I will have to try to do something.

In other news, I found the cutest nerd art I have ever seen. They even have a giant squid! O.O drool...

I also am geeking out over the early reviews of the new Star Trek movie. I know it comes out in a few weeks, but the reviews here and here are making me feel really confident that it's not going to suck. And let's be honest, after all the crappy scifi (or syfy) / fantasy / superhero movies that have sucked over the years, our first reaction is usually "how much will it suck? - hopefully, not too much" rather than "this should be awesome". Those few genre movies that rock - Iron Man, The Dark Knight, LOTR - that are great just make it that much more agonizing for the others. Clearly, a good genre movie can be done, it just takes the will to do it correctly. Dare I hope for Star Trek?

Blog Every Day April (BEDA)

Inspired by Maureen Johnson's verve and determination to BEDA, as well as disgust at my complete inability to write, I have decided I am going to go for it as well. I'm not saying I won't resort to the "5 things make a blog posting" rule on occaision, but here it goes.

Today, I have dealt with the following issues:

1. I almost killed an employee I sent on travel. Traveling is part of his job and I was making a point as he had not traveled in over a year, but the man had an anxiety attack at the TDY location and ended up in the hospital. (sigh)

2. The AC has been broken on my floor for the second day in a row. At 1:00 in the afternoon, it has finally kicked in. I will scoop up all my melted parts and try to reconstitute myself before my 2:00 meeting.

3. People are freaking out since our security office has ruled that no cell phones can be brought onto our floor. There is no place outside our floor to put the cell phones either. The proposed solution? "Leave them at home." When asked what the plan would be if there were another 9-11 mega-emergency, the reply was "Well that won't happen, so don't worry about it." Niiiiice......

4. Offspring A was to have surgery on Monday for a long-standing problem. Serious but unavoidable. We were all set to go and it was postponed at the last minute for a week. Now S_, my wife, is on edge for another week, barely sleeping...

In addition,

I find the Peekaroo to be creepy.

The Accidental Juror

For the record, I was in a car accident Tuesday morning (2/20) in which my car was totaled. It was pretty scary. I was lucky to only have a broken ankle, a sprained wrist and some lacerations. I'm still having some sensory flashbacks, mostly the smell of the airbag deploying - burnt rubber, hot canvass, smoke, some other smell I can't quite recognize. The scariest thing about it is that I was unable to pull myself together enough to get out of the car. I just sat there and kept telling myself I needed to get out of the car, but needed some other guy's help to get out.

And on top of it all, I was on my way to jury duty when I got in the accident. I can't believe it. I have been waiting to be called for jury duty for ten years at least. The time I get called, I get in an accident and can't make it. Even Jennifer, the nurse in the ER, was incredulous. Why does everyone want to get out of it so badly? I really feel that I want to be a part of the judicial system and peer justice by serving on a jury. Is that so weird. Stephanie says that I need patriotic music in the background, but I really feel that way...

I've been trying to decide if I want to keep this blog for myself or if I want to open it to the public. Right now, no one knows that I have been keeping it. I started it on a whim, but I think I will keep going as is for now. Maybe it will be good to have a place for my own private rantings...
