A place to record my thoughts, my attempts at writing a novel and those shiny things that attract the attention of my hummingbird-brain. All these things literally have no mass.
You know it's going to be a bad day when...
>.< ...if I squeeze my eyes shut, I can't hear you...
It should be fine by the weekend or by Monday at the latest, and I think we can fix it with a minimal change. It's not exactly a technicality, but there is an apparent solution that should solve the problem and punt us back onto the side of law and order (for those who know where I work, ironic, no?). The issue is whether those I have to meet with on Friday about it see that same solution to be as apparent as I do.
Let's hope.
More Lessons from This Week
2. Your employees start looking at you funny when you begin discussing font choice. As in, the history of fonts and typeface creation.
3. I do, indeed, have the literary taste of a teenage girl. See "Books Read in 2010" sidebar.
Blog Every Day April (BEDA)
Inspired by Maureen Johnson's verve and determination to BEDA, as well as disgust at my complete inability to write, I have decided I am going to go for it as well. I'm not saying I won't resort to the "5 things make a blog posting" rule on occaision, but here it goes.
Today, I have dealt with the following issues:
1. I almost killed an employee I sent on travel. Traveling is part of his job and I was making a point as he had not traveled in over a year, but the man had an anxiety attack at the TDY location and ended up in the hospital. (sigh)
2. The AC has been broken on my floor for the second day in a row. At 1:00 in the afternoon, it has finally kicked in. I will scoop up all my melted parts and try to reconstitute myself before my 2:00 meeting.
3. People are freaking out since our security office has ruled that no cell phones can be brought onto our floor. There is no place outside our floor to put the cell phones either. The proposed solution? "Leave them at home." When asked what the plan would be if there were another 9-11 mega-emergency, the reply was "Well that won't happen, so don't worry about it." Niiiiice......
4. Offspring A was to have surgery on Monday for a long-standing problem. Serious but unavoidable. We were all set to go and it was postponed at the last minute for a week. Now S_, my wife, is on edge for another week, barely sleeping...
In addition,
I find the Peekaroo to be creepy.
Enough with the Drama... except you, HBO. You are good with the drama.
On to better topics, last night saw the debut of True Blood on HBO. I watched it with S_ and K_. Perhaps not the best choice, given the drooling that took place. As K_ so eloquently put it, "The problem with most shows is that they limit themselves to one hot guy. Here, there's one hot guy, and another, and another. It's wall-to-wall hot guys!"
Right.
Ok, so the series is gong to grow on me, and I am definitely going to have to go back and reread Dead until Dark. Good things are
1. I like the way they portray the redneck culture of Merlottes. It's exactly right. I didn't grow up in the South, but I was around some serious white trash (The Rusty Nail was the local bar, and no, I am not making that up.)
2. Anna Paquin as Sookie. I love how they are playing up the lack of thoughts from Bill as a balm to her weary psyche. You can just see her relax every time she touches him and the other voices fade out.
3. OK, S_, you win. Stephen Moyer as Bill Compton, the new vampire on the block. While not as convinced as my wife of his inherent sexiness, I do like the subtle look they give him that is reminiscent of his civil war past.
4. I can't wait to see Fangtasia next week.
Do. Not. Like.
1. Tara's abrasiveness. While I'm fine with making the character black, her abrasiveness does not seem natural somehow. It seems forced.
2. The opening credits. Song is fine, but they are just trying to be a little too weird. And that decaying fox? squick...
3. The grandmother. I like that actress, but here she is just rubbing me the wrong way. Especially when she says "My stars".
4. The rattlesnake vampire fangs with their "click" extension sound. Ugh.
All in all, I'm still excited about it and looking forward to next week. And finally, 442 miles to Rivendell makes today's total.
The Year of No Drama
1. NO DRAMA
2007 was a drama fest - work drama, personal drama, family drama. Enough for both 2007 and 2008. I've put up a big sign outside my office door. 2008 = No Drama. I can tell I'm going to have to smack some people around to make it stick, but if that's what it takes...
UPDATED, 5:45 pm
Dammit! I need to get a bigger sign. I already had one employee crying in my office. (sigh. I hate it when they cry.) She was in agony because the person in the cube next to her fell asleep and his snoring was keeping her from working and she didn't know what to do and she didn't want to cause a problem but she was just sitting there and she couldn't work because his snoring was so loud and how could she do her work and couldn't I understand how difficult it had been for her and....
I swear I'm not making this up. How could I possibly...? I swear I'm going to make people sign a release form before entering my office. "I will not be bringing any drama into this office under pain of torture or being seriously yelled at."
I'm making a bigger sign.
